Senior Spotlight: Jonathan Cubero Melero

In honor of the Farmington High School 2021 graduating class, over the next several weeks we will be highlighting a few of our outstanding seniors. These students have been nominated by Farmington Area Public Schools staff members for exhibiting hard work and pursuing their spark with passion during their time at FHS. Today’s Senior Spotlight is: Jonathan Cubero Melero!

Jonathan was living in Puerto Rico when Hurricane Maria struck the island in 2017. Although he was only beginning his high school career at that point, he spent a great deal of time helping with community clean up, food distribution, and reconstruction efforts. As a student in Puerto Rico, Jonathan was a part of the French Club and excelled academically. “The award I am most proud of was one I received my freshman year, when I was still living in Puerto Rico. I was among a selected group of students rewarded by the Senate of Puerto Rico for ‘outstanding academic achievements,’” he shared.

After his freshman year of high school, Jonathan moved to Minnesota and began attending Farmington High School. About the move he said, “Coming to Minnesota from Puerto Rico has not been easy. Throughout my years at FHS, I have had to struggle with both the great cultural and language differences. I have personally had to deal with feelings of insecurity and isolation because of this. However, Farmington has been a very open, accepting, and understanding community. Neighbors, teachers, and fellow students have always made me feel welcome and at home, something I am very grateful for.”

As an FHS student, Jonathan participated in Mock Trial his sophomore year. Since Spanish is his first language, he was also able to volunteer with the FHS English as a Second Language (ESL) program helping other students throughout his high school career. He has taken three Advanced Placement courses and four College in the School classes, and holds a GPA of 4.2. He consistently makes the Honor Roll and is currently a member of the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS).

Jonathan was described by his teacher, Rececca Wilson, as “driven, smart, and kind.” She said, “He is a model student and human being for his young generation!”

All About Jonathan

Favorite Classes & Teachers

“My favorite subject has always been history, and so one of my favorite classes here in FHS was AP US History with Mr. Graff. I enjoy reading and writing, so I always look forward to my English classes. Taking UMN English with Mrs. Nygren has been very exciting. Mrs. Nygren makes her classes very interesting, and the class itself is challenging in an enjoyable way.”

Future Plans

“I was admitted to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and plan to major in Industrial Engineering. My father is an engineer, so in a way I have been training my whole life to work in the field.”

Advice for Future Seniors

“A piece of advice for future seniors would be to always give your 100% in everything you do. At times, the responsibilities given to you might seem stressful or overwhelming, but giving your best effort will always ensure the best outcome, and in hindsight you will be satisfied with overcoming life’s challenges with strength and perseverance. This can apply to anything we do, whether in school, at work, or in everyday life.”
